It takes years of training and practical experience to become a skilled/accomplished wilderness traveler—and then teach sixty of our peers to do what took years to learn—and then LEAD them on an EXPEDITION!
The Elgin Brigade Voyageurs (Post 20 BSA) consisted of eighty Scouts on the water in six canoes: four 26’ North Canoes and two 34’ Montreal Canoes. We were the First Voyageur Brigade in modern times to travel as an Expedition on Lake Superior.
As the “first generation“ of modern Voyageurs, we had to learn to “walk the walk.” We had to paddle, sleep on the ground under our canoes, get up, and keep travelling—in the wilderness of North America.
The Elgin Brigade set the Benchmark for what it takes to be an accomplished VOYAGEUR!
For the American Bicentennial on July 4,1976, the Elgin Brigade Voyageurs rendezvoused with over 200 Canadian Scouts at Old Fort William in Thunder Bay, Ontario to celebrate our common heritage as free people of North America.
That was a lifetime ago. I was there at the beginning—when the Birch Canoe collided with the attributes of Scouting.
This book is about what it takes to be an accomplished wilderness traveler—a VOYAGEUR.
I encourage the reader to dig deep and hang on for a wild ride.
Maybe your future is in these pages.
There are more GREAT EVENTS planned—Sestercentennial is coming on July 4, 2026.
